"Egrets of Saint Frances Landing"
(You can find Saint Frances Landing some 13 river miles south of Astor, Florida on the Saint Johns River.)
Saint Frances Landing was a welcome whistle stop for many of the sixty-five or more steamboats
that called upon such isolated logging docks along the Saint Johns River.
As a boy I remember the ancient snail shells that turned from sun bleached white
above the black water to golden amber just beneath.
Volusia snails, as some may call them, were a food source for the ancient ones.
From those small discarded shells the forgotten ones built their burial mounts,
only to have their sacred places become hard ground
along the muddy banks to build new dreams to soon lost .
Form these landings a harvest of great bald cypress and old growth pine
moved by steamboat to sawmills in Jacksonville.
Now egrets of Saint Frances Landing tend these shell mounds
of the forgotten and keep silent the lost stories
when the sound of a steamboat whistle sent white egrets to flight.
