... the hounds were off as the
hunter crossed the bayhead.
The hunter's son hung onto his back with his small
arms slung in careless array around his Pa's neck.
Beyond laid Buck's Trail which promised to lead the hunter and his son
out of the Blue Creek back country
to their waiting jeep. For now the hunter gripped his shot gun with one
hand as he pulled on cypress limbs
just to keep balance. Every bone in his body hurt. However nothing hurt
more than knowing the day would end
without a buck. As the hunter's feet sunk in the pet moss a cold chill
crossed his mind. Quicksand! Ahead of him rose up
a mound of root mass entangled within cypress knees. Just as he reached
that dry place an eight pointer bolted
from its hiding place causing both the hunter and his son to fall back
against a baytree.
The shotgun discharged dropping the buck at their feet. Deer season
would end an hour later.
